Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability

The United States central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of positions created to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
